Apollo Gymnastics – One-Point Perspective Drawing

Class: DRAW 100 – Drawing I: Form and Space (Fall 2021)

Medium: Graphite Pencils (variety), Photoshop (for focal point), Tracing Paper

Focus: Perspective Drawing, Light + Shadow, Spatial Depth, Observation

Project Overview:

This early drawing assignment introduced me to the fundamentals of spatial perspective, proportion, and composition. We were asked to draw a one-point perspective scene using direct observation and photo references. I chose a personal subject—a gymnastics gym—that felt familiar and meaningful to me as a former gymnast.

My Process:

I began by importing my reference photo into Photoshop to identify the focal point and horizon line. From there, I used tracing paper to break down the structure and composition. The most challenging part was redrawing the entire gym by hand using graphite pencils while keeping the scale and vanishing point accurate. I layered different grades of graphite to create depth and shadow, with careful attention to surface textures and lighting.

Reflection:

This piece taught me to be patient and analytical in my work. It also reminded me how rewarding it is to bring together my passions—art and gymnastics—in one visual story. Even though it’s from the beginning of my SCAD journey, it holds a special place in my portfolio and shows how much I enjoy shading, structure, and translating real spaces into thoughtful compositions.
