Expressive Typography Book

Class: GRDS 353 – Type II: Language, Expression & Media (Summer 2025)

Tools Used: Adobe InDesign

Focus: Expressive Typography, Book Design, Layout Systems, Visual Storytelling

Project Overview:

This project explored how typography can convey emotion, voice, and narrative beyond words. I designed a typographic book inspired by I’m That Girl by Jordan Chiles, connecting the text to my own journey in gymnastics. Through expressive type, dynamic composition, and careful pacing, the book captures themes of perseverance, confidence, and identity. Each spread uses typographic rhythm and contrast to mirror the movement and strength of Chiles’ story, creating a personal and empowering reading experience.

Design Strategy:

I focused on translating emotional tone into visual form, balancing elegance and energy through type scale, hierarchy, and spatial tension. The book employs layered typography and intentional whitespace to guide the reader’s eye and evoke movement, echoing the rhythm of performance and growth.

Reflection:

This project deepened my understanding of how typography can shape emotion and meaning. It challenged me to move beyond functional design and use type as an expressive medium for storytelling. I learned how to visually interpret tone, rhythm, and personality, bridging my background in gymnastics with my passion for design. The process strengthened my ability to connect personal experience with typographic expression.
