Universal Presents Auro: Promoting Happiness in Parks Through Playful Tech

Project Summary

Over the course of 10 weeks, our team was challenged by our UXDG 340 client to “design a product that promotes happiness.” We chose to partner with Universal Studios and created a dual-experience product called Auro — a physical device paired with an interactive app.

The Auro device enhances in-park experiences through interactive storytelling, real-time quests, and playful communication. Users can pair the device with the app to explore hidden secrets, unlock digital badges, connect with other park visitors, and complete missions—like helping Gru steal the moon in our featured Minions Quest.

To showcase the versatility of Auro, we designed three unique themed boxes:

  • 🧛 Dark Universe Edition – for horror lovers helping Frankenstein complete spooky missions

  • 🐉 How to Train Your Dragon Edition – featuring wings and fantasy-based quests

  • 💛 Minions Edition – an interactive mission where users help Gru steal the moon

Tools & Fabrication

  • Design Tools: Figma (app UI), Adobe Illustrator (branding & packaging)

  • Fabrication Tools: 3D printer (device shell), acrylic paint, Fahm Hall sticker printer

  • Core Technologies: RFID pairing (conceptual), in-park connectivity, mobile UX

This project showcased how storytelling, physical computing, and immersive design can be combined to create joy and wonder in real-world spaces.
